Indexes and Abstracts

Indexes and abstracts provide a way to locate bibliographic citations for journal and newspaper articles. Many of these services track articles in a particular subject area. Once you have found relevant citations to articles using these indexes, you must then search the Library's Catalog to find out whether the Library owns the journals where the articles are printed, and to get call numbers for retrieving the journals. You can also check for electronic coverage of the journal on the Library's E-Journal site.

	Bibliography and Index of Micropaleontology Index of articles relevant to the study of microscopic fossils.
	Bibliography of Asian Studies Online Index of articles covering the field of Asian studies.
	Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC) Index (with abstracts) of materials relevant to education research and practice.
	General Science Collection Index (with some full-text) of articles from over 70 science journals. (Available from .)
	GeoRef via CSA Illumina Index of articles, books, reports, etc. relevant to geology and geophysics.
	GoogleScholar Search engine of scholarly literature from a wide variety of sources including academic publishers, professional societies, and university repositories.
	GreenFILE Index of scholarly and general interest titles relevant to the relationship between humans and the environment.

	LISTA- Library, Information Science & Technology Abstracts Index (with abstracts) of articles covering topics in librarianship, classification, cataloging, bibliometrics, online information retrieval, information management, etc.
	NASA Astrophysics Data System Index (with abstracts) of articles covering topics in astrophysics.
	PubMed Index of articles on biomedical topics.
	Science Reference Center Database of full-text materials on science topics (from journals, newspapers, reference books, etc.) designed for middle and high school students. (Available from .)
	Scirus Search engine of scientific data and scholarly articles from a wide variety of web sources (created by Elsevier).
	SORA - Searchable Ornithological Research Archive A retrospective index with full text articles from several major ornithological journals.
	SPIN Web (Searchable Physics Information Notices) Index (with abstracts and some full-text) of articles relevant to physics and astronomy.
	Teacher Reference Center- TRC Index of articles relevant to assessment, continuing education, curriculum development, pedagogical research, instructional media, science and math, etc.
	TOXLINE Index (with abstract) of articles pertaining to drugs and other chemicals.
	Zoological Record via ISI's Web of Knowledge Index of articles, proceedings, theses, etc. relevant to zoology.

E-Journal Collections

Coverage in these collections is restricted to certain parameters (for example, publisher, aggregator, recency, open access, etc.) and also (primarily) to articles that are available electronically. The availability of full-text articles depends on whether they are open access (free) or on the Library's subscription agreements with each publisher or aggregator.

Coverage for e-newspaper collections is restricted to particular news services and/or full-text availability.

Catalogs

Catalogs are databases of bibliographic records of books, journals, newspapers, electronic files, and other media collected by a particular library (such as the Museum Library's Catalog). Union catalogs provide access to the inventories of multiple libraries and they indicate the items owned by each library.

	Libdex Worldwide directory of library home pages and online catalogs.
	WorldCat Database containing millions of records of books, journals, and other materials cataloged by OCLC member libraries.
	WorldCat.org (free public version) Database containing millions of records of books, journals, and other materials by a network of libraries. This version has fewer features than the subscription version of WorldCat (see above).

Resources Available from New York City Public Libraries

• Academic Search Premier, MasterFILE Premier, and Business Source Premier can be searched simultaneously through their provider, EBSCOhost. Together these three files provide access to the full-text of over 4,000 general, business, and academic periodical (this resource is also available from Brooklyn Public Library and Queens Public Library).
• Gale's Ready Reference Shelf - database providing access to thirteen of Gale's reference directories including Encyclopedia of Associations, Encyclopedia of American Religions, Research Centers Directory, etc.
